Advocate
Offering perspective gained during a long and successful architecture career, through decades serving in leadership positions for architecture, preservation, and green building organizations, and as an engaged citizen, Carl has influenced the development of policies and programs at the local, state, and national levels.
As 2018 President of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), Carl has advocated for the building industry at the highest level, including testifying to the US House of Representatives. Carl’s contributions to policy development began in 1994 while serving on the Housing and Land Use Working Group of President Clinton’s Council on Sustainable Development.
Decades of advocacy work was conducted through a long list of professional associations supporting architecture, historic preservation, and green building, especially with AIA, Association for Preservation Technology (APT), and United States Green Building Council (USGBC).
For 2021, Carl is engrossed in two major advocacy initiatives. Locally, Carl is working with the District of Columbia Preservation League (DCPL) to conduct a series of six public programs exploring the role of historic preservation in meeting DC’s ambitious climate action targets. Internationally, Carl is working with the AIA, Architecture 2030, and the Climate Heritage Network (CHN) preparing for the 26th UN Conference of the Parties (COP-26) in Glasgow, Scotland.
