The urban era is here…cities will shape the future.

Laying the foundations for humanity’s urban future is the foremost challenge of the 21st century. Today, more than half of the world’s population lives in cities. By century’s end, nearly nine in ten people will. Human beings have become an urban species. Long after greenhouse gas emissions have been eliminated, the urbanization of our species will continue to reshape humanity’s future.

By no means is the overabundance of atmospheric CO2 the only challenge humanity faces today. Cities around the world grapple with the interlocking crises of climate, ecology, health, justice, affordability, resources, and resiliency.

Decarbonizing industry, agriculture, transportation, and cities will require investment at a scale that dwarfs the New Deal or Marshall Plan. It will touch every aspect of our lives. It presents an unprecedented historic opportunity for universal progress as humanity provides for its urban future.
